How did the Enschede market originate?

The history of the Enschede Market is long and rich, with roots dating back to the Middle Ages. In 1517, the city was devastated by a great fire, but the market remained an important economic center. From that moment on, Bishop Philip of Burgundy granted Enschede official permission to organize markets and fairs. At the time, the market was an essential gathering place where farmers from the surrounding area sold grain, livestock, and milk, while city residents purchased linen, firewood, eggs, and wine.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Enschede market evolved alongside the city’s economic changes, especially due to the growth of the textile industry. The trade in textiles, such as the popular “bombazine” (a mix of linen and cotton), flourished. In addition to textiles, straw, livestock, and other agricultural products were also traded, attracting buyers and sellers from outside the city.

In 1902, the Saturday market was created almost by accident when a pastry vendor decided to sell his goods on Saturdays near the church at Oude Markt. This led to the establishment of a weekly Saturday market, in addition to the traditional Tuesday market. In 1958, the market was officially relocated from Oude Markt to Van Heekplein, where it remains to this day.
